This is the only color photo of the race car and me. Taken in
the Gasoline Alley garage area at the speedway.
Plan
view showing the engine exhaust and the waste gate exhaust.
Left
side of the engine showing the waste gate system.
Right
side of the engine showing the engine breather and the fuel control.
Rear
view showing suspension, Halibrand quick change and the inboard brakes. Note the
beer can taped to the frame. The inboard brakes heated the quick change unit
causing it to breath heavy so we vented it to the beer can. It worked. what can
I say.
Front
view showing instrument panel. Instruments from left to right are; gas producer
rpm, EGT gage, output rpm, and oil pressure gage.
Consultation
in the pits. Bending over is Denny Moore, Chief Mechanic and car builder. Iin the
cockpit is Dan Gurney and kneeling is me scratching my butt.
Decision
time. That's me on the right sitting on the wall. Jack is out negotiating a new
driver while the car sits in the pits.
Duane
Carter in the car, one of Indy's all time great drivers and an all-around good
guy. Jack is giving him a pep talk while I'm nonchalantly surveying the scene.
That's
me backing out the high speed stop in one last desperate attempt to make the
show.
And that's about it, hope you enjoyed the story and photos. It
all happened 42 years ago. Actually the SAE paper and the original car design
was done in 1956. The problem was we were way ahead of our time. Today, rear
engine cars have completely taken over at Indianapolis. Later turbine cars with
more powerful engines so completely dominated the race that they were legislated
out of racing.
And basically, the fans prefer it that way. They like the deep roar of the piston
engines, it's a sound
they can relate to and appreciate.
I remember the first time I heard the blown Novi's come down the straightaway,
the hair on my arms stood on end and my chest vibrated. That was a race car
engine.
Take care. Have good thoughts.
